SPANISH VILLAS

Are you thinking about renting a villa in Spain for your holiday? Here's a simple checklist of the things you need to consider before you rush ahead and make the booking.

It probably goes without saying that when it comes to renting the best villas the 'early bird catches the worm', but you want to make sure you have thought of all of your requirements.

1. Think about whether you want your villa to have a swimming pool.

2. Access to the nearest airport or major trunk roads should be high on your list. You may not want an additional tiring journey to your villa, particularly if you have unforgiving kids in tow.

3. How much you pay for your villa in Spain will be an important consideration for many people. But it's no use living in a palace for a fortnight if you have to eat like a pauper!

4. Make sure you rent your villa in Spain from a reputable agent. Protecting your payment by using a credit card is one thing, but if the travel company goes bust the week before you're due to travel is likely to leave you without a holiday!

Increasing numbers of people are making their own travel bookings via the Internet and although this can save you hundreds of pounds by cutting out the middle-man, you need to be sure about the people you are dealing with. Inevitably, you will be asked to make deposits and perhaps full payment before you leave, but this is tantamount to handing money over to a stranger. Can you be sure that the website is not a scam to defraud people? Just be wary and take the usual precautions.

5. When it comes to the number of bedrooms, just make sure you are aware of whether some of the beds are put-you-ups. It is not uncommon to see villas for rent that talk about sleeping 8 when in truth there are just 2 bedrooms and a selection of sofa beds in other rooms like the lounge! That's fine if you know about this beforehand.

6. The location of your villa will also determine the price band. If you are miles from civilisation this may be the tranquillity you are seeking, but be clear about the travel implications in terms of shopping and eating out.
