LIPOSUCTION SIDE EFFECTS AND RISKS

Side effects of Liposuction

There are a number of relatively minor side effects, rather than serious complications, to liposuction treatment and these are as follows:

Bruising - it is customary for the patient to suffer fairly extensive bruising and it can be painful for up to a week after the operation. The actual bruising discolouration will gradually fade after a few weeks.

Swelling - there will be swelling in the area where the physician has used the cannula and this will generally reduce slowly gradually over a period of 4 to 8 weeks.

Scars - as this is intrusive surgery you will have a few scars and the size will vary according to the actual liposuction procedure. After a few weeks the scarring will lessen. For a few people the healing process could take up to a year.

Pain - there will be some pain after the liposuction procedure but this can be managed through prescribed and later by over-the-counter pain-killers.

Numbness - some patients will experience a level of numbness around the wound and this can continue for a week or so.

Limited mobility - a person's ability to move about without restriction will vary according the extent of the liposuction, their general health, age and where the procedure took place in the body. This can be alleviated by a few things like: wearing a compression garment, keeping the head and legs elevated.

Possible complications arising from liposuction

As with all surgical procedures, there are inherent risks and the surgeon should bring these to your attention during consultations. Experience had shown that the risk exponentially increases according to the age of the patient and the extent of body fat that is removed in one liposuction procedure. Regrettably, in the early days of pioneering liposuction in the 1990's there were some reported deaths as well as unacceptably high rates of complications. However, through experience and sharing best practice, surgeons have made significant progress in this area. The more serious health complications arising from liposuction procedures include amongst others:

An allergic reaction to medications or material used during surgery.

Infection caused by bacteria (but this is possible with many surgical procedures.

Skin damage Internal organ damage. Because the surgeon cannot see exactly where he is probing the cannula occasional damage can occur to internal organs but this is very rare since they are very careful when operating in particularly sensitive areas of the body.

Indentations in the skin can sometimes be visible after the wounds heal sand this can be particularly prevalent with older patients.
