The human eye is a very delicate organ and requires a great deal of care throughout a surgical procedure,
including the post-operative recovery period.
A skilled ophthalmologist will identify exactly what needs to be done and will be responsible for the care of the patient. Anaesthesia is always required for eye surgery and a local anaesthesia is most often used. To make sure the patient doesn't feel any pain, retrobulbar and peribulbar techniques are used on the area surrounding the eye muscle cone. Sometimes lidocaine topical gel is used as the anaesthesia for quick operations. However, this requires patient co-operation whenever this is used. Most commonly in the case of children and for traumatic eye injuries and major orbitotomies a general anaesthesia will be used. Cardiovascular monitoring is usual in local anaesthesia and is mandatory with general anaesthesia. The area around the eye is sterilised before surgery commences and antiseptics such as povidone-iodine will be used. In addition, sterile drapes, gowns and gloves are used during the eye surgery. Furthermore, a plastic sheet with a receptacle assists in the collection of fluids during phacoemulsification. In most procedures a speculum is inserted around the eyes to keep them open. For particularly nervous patients a facial nerve blocking agent such as lidocaine or bupivacaine is used. More and more people are resorting to laser eye surgery to correct vision defects and radial keratotomy is an example of refractive surgery without the use of a laser. |
