A brief History of Silver Cross Prams and Pushchairs by James Smythe

In 1877 William Wilson founded the business at Silver Cross Street, Hunslet Leeds. In 1898 a factory dedicated to Silver Cross Prams was built on white House Street and was name the Silver Cross Works.

In 1913 William Wilson died, had had patented over 30 inventions in his time. In the 1920's through to the 1930's Silver Cross Prams became incorporated and became the main baby carriage for the royal family.

Silver Cross supplied the first baby carriage to the Princess Royal In 1936 Silver Cross Prams grew too big for its previous factory and moved to an old silk factory in Guiseley where they remained until 2002.

During the 2nd World War part of the Silver Cross factory was used to produce parts for the war effort. Over 16 million parts were produced between 1939 and 1945 in the Silver Cross Factory.

In 1945 after the Silver Cross factory reverted back to producing prams, however with the experience gained over the war traditional plywood was replaced with aluminium the technology was then further improved in 1964 when Silver Cross Prams introduced the first Chromium Plating plant.

For the Silver Cross Prams centenary in 1977 they flew customers and buys around the worked in its Centenary craft, they also donated Princess Anne a baby carriage.

In the eighties Siver Cross Prams introduced the Wayfarer, this quickly became Britains best selling pushchair in over a decade.

They sold 3000 units a week. Between 1990 and 2002 Harrods was home for the relaunch of the famous Balmoral, in 2002, with stars such as Catherine Zeta Jones, Sarah Jessica Parker, Elizabeth Hurley and Brooke Shields all becoming proud owners. From 2002 to the presentAlan Halsall, owner and Managing Director of David Halsall International formed the new Silver Cross in 2002. A year later saw the arrival of the new Lifestyle Collection - which included the multi-award winning 3 in 1 sleepover.

Today the Lifestyle Collection includes pushchairs, travel systems, combinations and in-car safety.
