HAIR LOSS

The most common form of hair loss of baldness is a progressive thinning condition called androgenic alopecia and it happens in adult male humans. The amount of hair loss and the nature of baldness can differ significantly. The variations are as follows: there is male and female pattern alopecia (otherwise known as androgenic alopecia), alopecia areata involving a reduction of some hair from the head and alopecia totalis which is a condition where all head hair is lost and finally, the most severe type of hair loss which is called alopecia universalis where all hair from the head and the body is lost. Unfortunately, treating alopecia has limited success and the general rule is that if more hair is lost the treatment is less likely to be successful.

It is known that the average person's head has around 200,000 hair follicles and each of these follicles is capable of growing more or less 20 individual hairs over the course of a lifetime. Studies have shown that it is common to lose around 100 hairs every day.

Studies have shown that the incidence of baldness differs between the various population groups and there is a link with people's genetic background. It is said that environmental conditions do not appear to have an impact on baldness to any great extent. There was one study in Australia that demonstrated that the prevalence of hair loss from the front of the head increases as people get older and can affect more than half of women and more than 70% of men aged in excess of 80.

The condition called male pattern baldness is characterised by hair loss from the sides of the forehead and this is known as a receding hairline. In addition a bald patch can develop on top of the head and which will gradually spread over time. This type of baldness can be started by a substance called DHT, which is a sex hormone and hair growth promoter.

It is not yet known how DHT operates in this context, but it is understood that in people who are susceptible to the condition, DHT starts off a process of follicular degeneration. As a result of this process, the width of the hair shaft progressively decreases until it becomes fuzzy or ceases to exist altogether. Sadly, the beginning of hair loss can occasionally start at the end of puberty.

It was earlier thought that baldness was passed down from the maternal grandfather, but this theory has largely been eliminated over time. In reality, both parents can contribute to the likelihood of a child's subsequent hair loss.

Stopping and reversing hair loss cionditions

It is said that it is much easier to loss of healthy hairs than to attempt to re-grow hair in follicles that have already become dormant. A product called Finasteride and sold in the United States as Propecia) and Minoxidil sold as Rogaine or sometimes as Regaine have both shown success in partially reversing hair loss.

Some people will resort to surgery as a way of of reversing baldness and hair loss but it is clearly an extreme and potentially solution.

The surgical solutions include hair transplantation which involves taking from other parts of the head hair-producing follicles and then injecting them into balding areas of the head.
