BREAST IMPLANTS

Breast implants are becoming an increasingly popular form of cosmetic surgery because the relative cost has fallen in recent years. The breast augmentation procedure is always for cosmetic purposes when the woman wishes to enlarge to size of her breasts and it is often referred to as a 'boob job'. Alternatively, breast augmentation surgery can be used to good effect to reconstruct the breast after for instance a mastectomy or to correct inherent defect. To give you an idea of the scale of this industry, three years ago approaching 300,000 breast augmentation surgeries took place.

Essentially, there are two main types of breast implants. There is the saline filled implant and there is the implant that is filled with silicone gel. Whereas saline implants are produced with a silicone elastomer shell and then filled with a sterile saline liquid, the silicone gel implant is almost the same but is filled with a viscous silicone gel. There have been other implants that have been developed, mush are not so popular with surgeons.

It is known that breast implants have been used since the nineteenth century to enhance the size and shape of women's breasts.

In more modern times a number of different synthetic substances have been used together with silicone injections, but this often led to problems with the hardening of breasts, which in a few cases were so severe that the women needed to have mastectomies.

The breast implant surgical procedure is relatively short as it can take between one and two hours to perform.

It is known that saline-filled implants are the popular in the United States because of limitations with silicone implants. Interestingly, in most other countries saline filled implants are more prevalent.

The biggest problem with saline implants is that they are more likely to cause what are regarded as cosmetic problems such as rippling and will be generally more noticeable to the eye or even to the touch.

In the case of women with smaller breasts many breast augmentation surgeons think that the silicone gel implant is a superior product.

Post operative recovery

In general, patients are normally able to lead a full life and return to work after about a week after the breast implant surgery.

Generally, scarring will last for about six weeks and in some cases longer, but they will fade significantly a few months after surgery.

It needs to understood though that it will always be possible to see a small hairline for the rest of your life.
