ACUPUNCTURE
The word acupuncture is derived from the Latin words acus (needle) and pungere (prick) and is method of inserting and then manipulating small needles into certain points in the body to cure conditions. It is understood that acupuncture will resolve health problems and return the patient to a sense of well-being. Acupuncture is also known to be a great help in dealing with pain management issues. |

It is a little known fact that. The definition and interpretation of acupuncture points in the body are actually recognised and defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). The consensus of opinion is that acupuncture is believed to have started in China and for most people is associated with traditional Chinese medicine techniques. In fact there are different variations of acupuncture that are performed around the world and these originate from Korea, Japan and China.Over the years many scientists have studied the efficacy of acupuncture and there is substantive evidence that it can be effective in treating chronic low back pain and nausea and and some evidence exists that it can help with neck pain and even headaches. Many scientists are sceptical about the claimed benefits, but some would acknowledge that patients can benefit from psychologically induced physical relief of symptoms. In other words, if you believe in something it stands a chance of working through psychosomatic relief. |

The acupuncture points are organised around twelve main meridians which are situated around the body. In addition, there are
eight extra meridians but only two have their own acupuncture points. The remaining six meridians are triggered by using what
is known as a "master and couple point" technique which involves inserting the needles in the acupuncture points situated on
the twelve main meridians that correspond to the particular extra meridian.
Interestingly, ten of the main meridians are actually named after body organs (the heart and liver etc.), whereas the remaining two are named after body functions (the heart Protector and the San Jiao). The two most important of the eight additional meridians are located on the line of the posterior and anterior aspects of the head and trunk. Whereas the twelve primary meridians travel vertically, bilaterally and symmetrically and each channel corresponds to and then connects internally with one of the twelve Zang Fu ( or organs). Effectively this means that there are 6 yin and 6 yang channels. In addition there are 3 yin and 3 yang channels on each arm and 3 yin and 3 yang on each leg. The 3 yin channels located on the hand Pericardium, Lung and Heart) start on the chest and then run along the inner surface of the arm along to the hand, but mostly the anterior portion. The 3 yang channels of the hand (Large intestine, small intestine and San Jiao) start on the hand and run along the outer surface of the arm to the head, but mostly the posterior portion. Alternatively, the 3 yang channels of the foot (Gallbladder Stomach and Bladder) begin on the face around the eye, and run down the body and through the outer surface of the leg to the foot, but chiefly the anterior and lateral portion. The 3 yin channels of the foot (the Liver, Spleen and Kidney) begin on the foot and run up the inner surface of the leg to the chest, but mostly posterior and medial portion. Chinese theory maintains that acupuncture works by restoring the free flow of what is known as "qi" around the body. It is known that pain or illnesses are treated by trying to restore the balance of qi, whether a surplus or deficiency. It is said that pain is thought to indicate that something is blocking the natural flow of qi. It is reported that when acupuncture isbeing performed oftentimes patients experience the sensations of stimulus known in Chinese as "deqi". This sensation is said to be evidence that the effected point has been found. In fact, there are now electronic devices available for sale that will make a noise when what they have been programmed to describe as the "correct" acupuncture point is pressed. |
